Press conference today regarding KSP, KVE reorganization

Gov. Steve Beshear will be holding a press conference this afternoon about the reorganization of the Kentucky State Police and the Kentucky Department of Vehicle Enforcement.

There is speculation that Beshear will propose that the state police absorb the Department of Vehicle Enforcement, an agency that monitors and enforces traffic laws for commercial vehicles and highway safety laws. Vehicle enforcement officers, along with being versed in those specialized laws and regulations, also go through the same law enforcement training as local police officers and sheriff’s deputies.

Both the state police and the vehicle enforcement department have posts in Henderson.

The press conference on the reorganization will begin at 4 p.m. EST in Frankfort, with Beshear joined by KSP Commissioner Rodney Brewer and J. Michael Brown, the secretary of the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet.

Update…

Gov. Steve Beshear signed an executive order Monday afternoon making the Kentucky Department of Vehicle Enforcement a division within the Kentucky State Police.

The department had been a semi-autonomous entity under the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet, but under Beshear’s plan will return to its former home within the Kentucky State Police.

Beshear cited efficiency and the ability to share resources as the driving forces behind the move.
