Leaf collection a breeze

The 2009-10 leaf collection season in Owensboro is history, but it won’t be one for the history book. Only a little more than 800 tons of leaves were collected, or 47 percent less than the previous year. Damage to the city’s trees, first by Hurricane Ike and then by the great ice storm of 2009, greatly curtailed the amount of leaves that hit the ground last fall.

According to the Sanitation Department, 87 percent of this year’s leaves were collected by six vacuum crews, 11 percent were removed by two bag crews and residents brought the remaining 2 percent to the drop-off point behind the Sportscenter.

Most of the leaves — 95 percent — were collected before Christmas and by Feb. 12 the vacuum trucks were no longer needed and limb and brush collection has resumed. No city employees were injured collecting leaves, no equipment was damaged and only 13 temporary workers were used, five fewer than last year.
