Rothenberg adds KY-2 race to watch list

Political analyst Stuart Rothenberg has added Kentucky’s 2nd District race to his watch list, and views it as leaning Republican.

The open seat is currently held by U.S. Rep. Ron Lewis, a Cecilia Republican, and Democrat David Boswell of Sorgho and Republican Brett Guthrie of Bowling Green are vying to replace Lewis next year.

Lewis has held the 2nd District seat since 1994, and the 21-county area is Democratic according to voter registration but is generally considered to be a more conservative district.

Overall, Rothenberg is predicting a gain of between 10 and 20 seats by Democrats in the U.S. House on Nov. 4.

The analyst had previously written off Boswell, noting the disparity in fundraising totals between the two candidates, who are both state senators. Through June 30, Boswell had $45,000 in campaign cash on hand compared to $660,000 for Guthrie.

But about two weeks ago, Rothenberg wrote that Boswell had “a chance” after he was added to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s Red to Blue program and the committee reserved more than $800,000 in advertising time in the district.
